PLEASE NOTE: THE NOVEMBER MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE THIRD WEDNESDAY, NOT THE USUAL SECOND WEDNESDAY.| SPECIAL TOPIC: SHAME Everyone experiences shame of varying degrees, but little is ever said about it in our everyday lives. Shame creates a state of disconnection and rumination that interferes with motivation, relationships, and psychological growth. This is why it's so important to learn to navigate it when it is triggered, and resolve the issues that perpetuate it. People try to tune out shame because it is painful and incapacitating. It brings on our helpless and worthless feelings, so it is difficult to reach out or speak up about what is going on. When I bring a group's attention to shame, they can be empowered by understanding the big picture of shame affect, triggers, how to step back or tolerate it enough to begin to move through it, and how to begin accessing one's larger needs and goals to get back on track. Using simple steps that I teach based on affect research, a person learns how to release themselves from the shame when it is unhealthy, often for the first time. When it is a healthy shame that is triggered, I teach people a way to begin `coming back' when so much seems lost. When people use the tools and work to understand their shame, their motivation can free up and return to the journey of pursuing their best intentions and goals. Share your story and strategies, talk with others who "get it," and have some laughs at this friendly drop-in group.
It’s not a "moan and groan" group. It's more of an ADHD Salon, with interesting conversation and sometimes chocolate.
So, come join us the third Wednesday of each month. (Parents are welcome, including parents of adults with ADHD. Many ADHD treatment issues are the same across the lifespan, and this is a rare opportunity for you to talk to adults with ADHD about their expeience as children and young adults. But rrimary and high school education issues are not discussed.)

THIS LECTURE HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO THE FALL. THE DATE WILL BE POSTED SOON.
Speaker: Dr. Stephen Hinshaw, leading ADHD researcher,
and author of the new book The Triple Bind: Saving Our Teenage Girls from Today's Pressures
Our girls are at risk, says psychologist and prominent ADHD authority Stephen Hinshaw. Societal expectations, cultural trends, and conflicting messages are creating what he calls “the Triple Bind” for our girls and young women.
That bind is putting more and more girls at risk for aggression, eating disorders, depression, and even suicide. He recently conducted research following girls with ADHD into young adulthood, and he will include in his talk results from that research and the particular way the Triple Bind might affects girls with ADHD.
Fortunately, this nationally respected author and ADHD researcher works in the Bay Area and graciously agreed to come talk with our group.
Hinshaw is chair of the Psychology Department at the University of California, Berkeley.
You can read about his work here: http://psychology.berkeley.edu/faculty/profiles/shinshaw.html
And you can read about the book here:http://triplebind.com/
