| SPECIAL TOPIC: SHAME Everyone experiences shame of varying degrees, but little is ever said about it in our everyday lives. Shame creates a state of disconnection and rumination that interferes with motivation, relationships, and psychological growth. This is why it's so important to learn to navigate it when it is triggered, and resolve the issues that perpetuate it. People try to tune out shame because it is painful and incapacitating. It brings on our helpless and worthless feelings, so it is difficult to reach out or speak up about what is going on. When I bring a group's attention to shame, they can be empowered by understanding the big picture of shame affect, triggers, how to step back or tolerate it enough to begin to move through it, and how to begin accessing one's larger needs and goals to get back on track. Using simple steps that I teach based on affect research, a person learns how to release themselves from the shame when it is unhealthy, often for the first time. When it is a healthy shame that is triggered, I teach people a way to begin `coming back' when so much seems lost. When people use the tools and work to understand their shame, their motivation can free up and return to the journey of pursuing their best intentions and goals.
